The term metatarsalgia is derived from the Latin words ‘metatarsal’ (metatarsal bone) and ‘-algie’ (pain) and translates into foot pain. Patients who suffer from metatarsalgia, often suffer from pain in the forefoot, especially under load.
Apart from that, painful corns can grow near the toes. Walking barefoot on a hard surface usually causes the most problems.
Metatarsalgia: What are the Causes?
Incorrect loading
The main cause for metatarsalgia is incorrect loading, pressing the bone down towards the sole of the foot. As a first measure, the body forms corns in the corresponding stress zone that are supposed to cushion the pressure. If the pressure continues to increase, these first measures do not bring relief anymore and every step hurts. Patients compare this pain with the sensation caused by stepping on sharp stones.
Claw toes
Sometimes the so-called claw toes can cause metatarsalgia. The pathological upright position of the toe presses the metatarsal bone towards the sole of the foot, resulting in the typical symptoms.
Nerve Disorders
If the metatarsal bones lie to close to each other, they might squeeze the nerves in between together, causing painful inflammations. The medical term for this phenomenon is Morton neuralgia, which can trigger the same symptoms like the pathological position of the metatarsal bone.
Metatarsalgia: What Can Be Done Therapeutically?
In an early stage, shoe inlays can help to additionally buffer the areas of congestion. However, if the pain increases even under these first measures, surgery should be considered.
Metatarsalgia Germany: Surgical Correction
The aim of the surgery is to provide relief from the pain caused by the symptoms of the metatarsalgia. This can be achieved by lifting the metatarsal bone, increasing the distance to the sole of the foot. In case the corresponding is too long, it should be adjusted to the correct length. In most cases a small medical screw is being inserted into the bone. It will remain there and does not have to be removed in a second surgery.
Treatment after a Surgery
- Removal of stitches after about 2 weeks
- Wearing special foot wear for a duration of 4 weeks
- Lymphatic drainage depending on level of post-operative swellin
- Physiotherapy if needed
